Anthropic’s IPO needs believers to bridge it to the payoff

Liz’s view Anthropic’s IPO prospectus is a perfect ink-blot test. Believers will see a fast-growing company with blue-chip backers, $131 billion of cash, and founders with a seriousness of purpose. Anthropic has burned less than 7% of the capital it has raised, good enough for respected industry trade SemiAnalysis to declare it “the most efficient scaling of a business in the history of capitalism.” Skeptics will see a loss-making company whose marketing expenses are rising twice as fast as revenue. Anthropic is carrying huge future liabilities — at least $542 billion in payments due for data-center leases and chips, a figure that appears only in footnotes and one it can’t hope to meet without continuous fundraising.
