Single Agent Beats Multi-Agent Teams on Cost, Speed, and Quality: Anthropic

The enterprise AI world's default assumption — that a coordinated fleet of specialized sub-agents will always outperform a single agent — has just been challenged by the company whose models sit at the center of most of those fleets. Anthropic's Applied AI team published guidance this week arguing that, in a significant share of real enterprise deployments, one well-designed agent outperforms an entire pipeline of specialist sub-agents on quality, latency, and cost simultaneously. The finding arrives alongside an open-source migration toolkit at github.com/anthropics/single-agent-loop-kit — available as a free GitHub download — that gives engineering teams a structured way to test whether their own architectures are worth rebuilding. In one customer comparison Anthropic examined, the single-agent configuration ran approximately twice as fast as the multi-agent setup it replaced.
