The U.K. is establishing the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, bringing frontier artificial intelligence and biological science together to detect biological threats earlier and accelerate vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures. The AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) will receive £100 million ($133.7 million) in government funding, alongside up to £200 million ($267.49 million) in commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, as the U.K. moves to strengthen defences against biological risks emerging alongside increasingly capable AI. The initiative comes as advances in AI create new opportunities for scientific discovery while also changing the biological risk landscape. AIBL will focus initially on developing technical capabilities to enhance early detection of emerging biological threats and accelerate the development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
