A group of cybercriminals allegedly used artificial intelligence (AI) agents powered by Claude, Grok and Kimi to target more than 400 banks and financial firms across Latin America, according to a claim shared by independent analyst Shanaka Anslem Perera. The alleged operation highlights growing concerns about how AI tools could be misused to automate cyberattacks against financial institutions. In a post on X, Perera said the crime group ran AI agents from multiple platforms in parallel to carry out the attacks. The operation was reportedly identified by cybersecurity firm Straiker, which specialises in AI security and threat detection. According to Perera's account, the attackers allegedly bypassed the AI systems' safety restrictions by presenting themselves as an authorised red team.
