Anthropic is expanding independent scrutiny of its artificial intelligence systems by bringing nonprofit evaluators into its operations, giving selected researchers access to internal tools, infrastructure, and risk-assessment processes as concerns grow over AI developers’ capability to adequately monitor more capable models. The company announced Thursday that it is working with Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR) and SecureBio, while discussing potential partnerships with additional organizations, including Hugging Face. The initiative forms part of Anthropic’s commitment to embed external evaluators within the company to examine its safety practices, investigate risks, and publish findings. The move follows a proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei last month calling for a slower pace of AI model development and greater independent verification of companies’ adherence to safety commitments.
