Anthropic PBC, the US-based artificial intelligence company behind Claude, has acknowledged in a written statement filed before a court in Belagavi, Karnataka, that it has a wholly owned Indian subsidiary. The admission has intensified scrutiny of an ongoing trademark dispute with a local software company that claims it was using the Anthropic name before the American AI firm was established. The legal battle involves Anthropic Softwares Private Limited, a Belagavi-based company that says it has used the Anthropic name since 2017. The company alleges that the US AI firm’s use of the same name creates brand confusion and threatens its business identity. Anthropic PBC, founded in 2021, has disputed the local company’s claims.
