Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, registered a net loss of over $80 billion in the first six months of 2026, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. However, the details in the report, based on undisclosed financial documents, could not be independently verified immediately. Published on Tuesday (October 20), the report indicated that the company's losses widened compared to the same period last year, when Anthropic posted a loss of roughly $13 billion. According to preliminary disclosure filings, the steep rise in losses this year was primarily driven by accounting expenses. The report noted that nearly $72 billion of the accounting charges stemmed from fluctuations in the valuation of convertible debt instruments and other financial assets issued by Anthropic to raise capital.
