At its rumored $2.2 trillion IPO valuation, Anthropic’s pledge of 5% of the company equates to roughly $100 billion, surpassing anything the Gates Foundation has ever raised. That figure exceeds the entire GDP of Costa Rica and is enough to fund NASA for four consecutive years, making it the largest philanthropic capital commitment in history. Despite the scale of the gesture, public reaction has been largely negative, with critics questioning the transparency, motivations, and ultimate structure of the pledge. The shares will not go directly to individuals but instead flow to a mixture of NGOs, charities, and what Anthropic describes as “specific populations of people,” with the company retaining authority over who qualifies.
