Anthropic Posts $80.7bn First-Half Loss Ahead of Planned IPO

Anthropic recorded a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026 as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a potential stock market listing that could value it at around $1.5 trillion. The loss increased sharply from $13 billion during the same period a year earlier, according to a draft IPO prospectus reviewed by Reuters. However, the headline figure does not represent $80.7 billion of cash spent running the business. Around $72 billion of the loss resulted from an accounting charge reflecting an increase in the estimated value of bonds that could eventually convert into Anthropic shares. As Anthropic's valuation has increased, the estimated fair value of those instruments has also risen, creating substantial accounting charges.
