Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has defended the company’s “race to the top” strategy in a long post on X. He was replying to Nathan Calvin, chief strategy officer at the advocacy group Encode AI. Amodei listed nine decisions he said cost Anthropic commercially but made AI safer. He also said the company could have handled some of Calvin’s points better. Calvin’s criticism followed Anthropic’s response to the backlash over its leaked AI safety bill. On 19 October, he wrote that the company’s answer was “still not really engaging with the heart” of the issue. Amodei posted his reply early on Wednesday. It has been viewed more than 800,000 times. He said that strategy only works if the company practising it is at the frontier.
